Students Quebecers are not the only ones to protest against tuition fees. Their British comrades came down Wednesday by thousands in the streets of London and other cities to protest against significant increases in fees that are charged to attend university. Marches, protests, speeches were held in different universities of the country, including Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, Bristol, Southampton, Oxford, Cambridge, Leeds, Newcastle, Bournemouth, Cardiff and Glasgow. These events occur nearly two weeks of similar events which had ended in violence. Nearly 50,000 people had taken at these rallies. The police have already warned the demonstrators they will not hesitate to make arrests if they become violent. The British government has angered the students after announcing that the registration fees in British universities would increase from 3,290 pounds ($ 5,285) to 6000 pounds, or about $ 10 000 Canadian. In certain circumstances, the costs claimed may even reach 9000 pounds, or nearly $ 15 000. |
